I mean I use it to help with my Grammar and spelling, but that's it really. It's the Art side that's most upsetting. AI could be so helpful but it seems to be used for entertainment instead, such a waste.
Individual writers might be able to use AI as a tool. Corporate American, however, will use it to wipe out jobs. Yes, we can all still be hobbyists, but even those of us who are often like to dream of making some money doing what we love.
As for all of us using AI, I think it's a mistake to equate things like spell check with AI. They existed before AI as we know it now even existed.
As far as AI being creative and the comparison to human processes, the difference is that we have life experience which influence how we are inspired by various stimuli to create things. AI can be trained on the stimuli, but it has no life experience to add to the mix. It can create the illusion of creativity, but it's process is really not that similar to what humans do. (AI requires huge piles of material to be able to master language, for example, for more than what humans need to master reading and writing. It's just not the same thing.
Yes, as the essay says, companies will absolutely use AI to eliminate some jobs, but new jobs will get created that only make sense in an AI world. Our responsibility is to keep up, which has always been true since the tech age began. I’m certainly using skills now that were unheard of and impossible when my career began.
What is the alternative? Be a Luddite? History marches on despite it all. Best to learn new skills.
Grammar check with AI is fundamentally better than previous tools.
Your thought about life experience is well taken. That is our main defense against AI: we each have a unique voice that AI will not replicate. So use that unique voice to stand out. Same as it ever was.
I think AI now consists of a broad number of tools that it can’t all be lumped under one heading. There’s the “autocorrect” AI types (which you still need to check especially if you are writing fantasy and making up words) and then there’s the LLM, which students use to write their essays, etc. These are the ones taking creative people’s jobs … (I mean, how many publishers are seriously going to take the high road and only buy non-AI manuscripts when other publishers are making a ton of money using AI?) Sure, we’ll all still be able to write, but it’ll be as a hobbyist (which is what I am) because scripts will be generated by AI, books will be generated by AI. We’ll all know how to write ChatGPT prompts but be unable to look for answers outside the internet box. Anywho, it’d be great if it were “just another tool”, but the tech bros are beating us over the head with it. It’s more of a weapon of mass stupidity. Then there is the insane amount of energy used by LLM which affects the climate.
Heh, humanity needs no weapons of mass stupidity, we can achieve stupidity all on our own, and many of us are proud to display it…
It’s just another tool the way computers were just another tool. The more general purpose a tool is, the more it upheaves society. Sure, another upheaval is coming. But we all have our unique voice, and that will never be replicated.
This is good. Much like Subway or whatever eatery, A.I. is coming to your town regardless of how you feel about it. I think people with sound minds understand what it can be for and shouldn't be for. Therefore, it is a tool like every other tool. Glad you wrote this.
